Light & Wonder Review: Platform, Pricing & Licensing
A top-tier regulated casino technology supplier, not merely a game aggregator. OpenGaming brings 6,500+ games and unmatched US distribution, while Open Platform System is a real PAM with wallet, payments, bonusing, loyalty, RG and reporting. There is no sportsbook, white-label licence wrapper or proprietary live studio, and the Dragon Train settlement plus ongoing Evolution trade-secret arbitration materially temper the trust score.

Analyst take · company & viability
Light & Wonder is a financially durable public group with US$3.314bn FY2025 revenue, US$1.443bn AEBITDA and US$452m free cash flow. iGaming itself reached US$337m revenue and US$125m AEBITDA in 2025, then grew another 18% in Q1 2026. The sole ASX listing reduces US-market visibility but the company remains an SEC registrant. Debt is meaningful at US$5.2bn face value, although net leverage improved to 3.4x at 31 March 2026; cash generation and recurring revenue make vendor-continuity risk low.

Security incidents
noneNo material Light & Wonder cyber incident was identified in public filings or regulator records through 2 August 2026. A 2024 CrowdStrike outage disrupted some operations but was a third-party global incident, not evidence of a breach of the iGaming platform.
Litigation history
disputesUS$127.5m/approximately US$128m Aristocrat settlement in January 2026 over Dragon Train/Jewel of the Dragon, with affected titles withdrawn and claims dismissed. Evolution trade-secret arbitration remains active; an Australian shareholder class action tied to Dragon Train disclosures was filed in April 2026. The US court dismissed Evolution patent claims in March 2026, but ICC arbitration over alleged trade-secret misuse continues. This is a material integrity and governance risk.

Verdict
Light & Wonder belongs on any regulated casino shortlist for content, US access or a mature PAM. Buy OGS when you already have a platform; add OPS when you need the casino back end. The product is stronger than a content-only label suggests, but the IP-governance record is serious enough to keep the rating at 7.7.
Who it's for
- Regulated mid-market and enterprise casino operators that need best-in-class US content distribution, a mature casino PAM, or both, and can operate under their own licence.
Who should skip
- Sportsbook-led operators, startups needing a provider-held white-label licence and managed B2C operations, crypto businesses, or buyers unwilling to accept the IP-litigation governance risk.

How Light & Wonder compares
Against Aristocrat/Pariplay, L&W has stronger direct US casino distribution and a clearer first-party content engine, while Aristocrat is broader through sportsbook and iLottery. Against Playtech, L&W is stronger in US content and aggregation but materially narrower operationally because it lacks sportsbook, live-studio ownership and B2C turnkey. Against EveryMatrix, L&W has better US content reach and franchises; EveryMatrix is more transparent as a modular full-stack operator platform.

Performance & integration
Analyst take · what you can really launch
There are two distinct buys. OGS is a content and aggregation layer plugged into an existing PAM. OPS is the fuller casino back end: player accounts, wallet, 40+ payment integrations, bonusing/loyalty, RG, portal and reporting. An operator can therefore launch or migrate a casino technology stack with L&W, but must bring its own licence, merchant structure, B2C operations and any sportsbook. Contract OGS and OPS separately so catalogue economics, data portability and operational responsibility remain visible.

Analyst take · content depth
Content remains the reason most operators shortlist L&W. OpenGaming has 6,500+ games from 60+ partners, broad live and table coverage through third parties, and powerful first-party franchises from L&W, ELK and Lightning Box. Cross-network insight, jackpots and Elevate engagement add real value. Proprietary live casino is gone, however, and the official portfolio still references Authentic content after the business exit, so verify availability market by market rather than trusting the catalogue page blindly.

Frontend & player experience
Analyst take · player experience
L&W can shape more of the player experience than a normal aggregator. OPS controls account, wallet, bonusing, loyalty and safety; Integrated Player Portal provides a configurable API-driven lobby; Elevate and PlayJeux add rewards, missions, jackpots and multiplayer. It is not a general-purpose website CMS, so the operator still owns brand UX, acquisition journeys and final mobile/web presentation.

Analyst take · running & growing on it
OPS provides the core casino operating back office, payment connections, reporting and compliance integrations. L&W also supplies account management, technical support, regulatory guidance, promotional support and rapid custom-game development. It does not replace an operator’s fraud, AML, CRM, support and B2C compliance teams; those are operator-owned or third-party functions integrated into OPS.

Analyst take · licensing & compliance
The licence footprint is excellent and unusually transparent, with named L&W entities and licence numbers across Malta, Gibraltar, UK and continental Europe, plus all seven US iGaming states and Canada. Active UK entities show no recorded regulatory actions. Security governance follows ISO/NIST practices and regular third-party tests, but a public OPS/OGS ISO 27001 certificate was not established. The compliance weakness is governance rather than licensing: the Dragon Train resolution and ongoing Evolution matter require enhanced IP and product-approval diligence.

Quote only, not publishedMost terms here are negotiated privately and quoted on request, which is normal for the industry and exactly what an operator should pin down in writing before signing.
Analyst take · the real cost & the catch
The principal disclosed model is participation: L&W takes a percentage of operator NGR. OGS, first-party content, partner games, jackpots/Elevate, OPS and payment integrations can each carry separate economics. Demand a line-item schedule and do not infer the operator contract term from public four-year studio deals.

Editorial & analyst notes
Light & Wonder is strongest where regulated casino content, US market access and platform scale intersect. OpenGaming processed US$109bn of wagers in 2025 and distributes 6,500+ games from 60+ partners across 36 jurisdictions. More importantly, the old description of L&W as content-only is wrong: Open Platform System is a full casino PAM supporting player accounts, wallet/payments, bonusing, loyalty, RG, integrations and real-time reporting. That makes L&W viable as a casino back end under an operator’s own licence, although OGS content remains the economic center of the business. The boundaries are clear. OpenBet and lottery were sold in 2022, proprietary live casino was closed in 2025, and L&W does not provide a provider-held white label or run the operator’s B2C business. The largest concern is integrity and IP governance: L&W paid about US$128m to settle the Dragon Train/Jewel of the Dragon dispute, withdrew games, still faces Evolution trade-secret arbitration and now a related shareholder class action. Excellent assets and financial strength earn a high rating; that legal pattern prevents a top trust score.
Strengths
- Elite US-regulated distribution
- 6,500+ games and 60+ partners
- strong first-party franchises
- full OPS PAM with wallet, payments and RG
- 36 regulated jurisdictions
- public financial transparency
- profitable fast-growing iGaming segment.
Trade-offs
- No sportsbook or white label
- proprietary live casino exited
- pricing and SLA terms are private
- product/site information can lag portfolio changes
- major Dragon Train settlement and continuing IP-related litigation.
Standout feature
OpenGaming scale and US reach combined with a genuine OPS PAM — content network and casino back end from the same financially strong supplier.
Biggest weakness
Product breadth stops at casino. There is no sportsbook, provider-held white label or proprietary live studio, while full-stack operational services remain the operator’s responsibility.
Best use case
A regulated US or international casino operator combining OpenGaming content reach with OPS player accounts, wallet, payments and engagement under its own licence.
Ideal operator
A licensed regulated casino operator with meaningful scale, internal B2C/compliance operations and a need for either one premium content integration or a proven OPS casino back end.
Crypto
No crypto proposition; regulated fiat casino infrastructure only.
Support
Support is enterprise-grade: dedicated account and technical management, online ticket portal, reporting exports and a major-incident escalation channel. Confirm response targets, service credits and ownership boundaries between OGS, OPS, PSPs and third-party studios in the SLA.
Migration
For OGS-only integration, map game IDs, wallet callbacks, certification and lobby metadata. For OPS migration, add player/account history, balances, limits, KYC status, payment tokens, bonus liabilities and reconciliation. Require tested exports and a migration-out clause; L&W does not publish these commercial terms.
Dealbreakers
Need for sportsbook, crypto rails, provider-held licence, managed B2C operations, proprietary live studio, fully public API/SLA terms, or zero tolerance for unresolved IP-governance concerns.
Is Light & Wonder only an aggregator?
No. OGS is aggregation, while OPS is a full casino PAM with wallet, payments, bonusing, loyalty, RG and reporting.
Does it offer sportsbook?
No; OpenBet was sold in 2022.
Does it still run live casino?
Its proprietary live operation ended in 2025, but third-party live games remain available through OGS.
Does it offer white label?
No; the operator supplies its own licence and B2C operations.
Why is the score below eight?
The Dragon Train settlement and continuing Evolution/shareholder litigation materially reduce trust.
